10 Books I Picked Up On a Whim

I'm coming back from my break for a short time because I really liked this topic and wanted to give it a go. Top 10 Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

I rarely buy books on a whim - I feel like there's too much risk of me not liking it, or if I've heard nothing about it I might not be motivated to read it. But the most magical thing that can happen to a bookish person is when they pick up a book they know nothing about and completely FALL IN LOVE. It is a rare occurrence that should be treasured.

5 That Worked

The Shapeshifter by Ali Sparkes - 4 stars
I'd heard nothing about this series. I always remember how I came across a book, but with The Shapeshifter series I have no idea.

The 13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison - 4 stars
I remember spotting The 13 Treasures in my school library after seeing it several times in Waterstones. The cover was gorgeous and at the time I was still obsessed with fairies, so obviously I had to read it.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz - 5 stars
I'd seen a couple of pictures of this book floating around tumblr, but otherwise heard nothing about it. In all honesty, it was a cover buy.

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell - 5 stars
Another cover by. I think I could have happily left The Bone Clocks unread on my shelf forever - I didn't know and didn't care what it was about!

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman - 4 stars
I was familiar with the author because of her social media presence, but I requested this ARC with no idea what I was getting into. There were hardly any reviews and I didn't even know what genre it was!

5 That Didn't

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - 2 stars
My friend got me this book for my birthday. I knew nothing about it, but still gave it a go.

Tempest by Julie Cross - 1 star
I found nothing special in Tempest. I can't remember what specifically didn't work for me - it just didn't.

Demon Road by Derek Landy - 3 stars
This was another book I requested from Netgalley on a whim. I hadn't read Landy's other work but demons always sounds like an exciting premise, so I went for it.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver - 3 stars
Cover buy again. Although it was nicely written, there wasn't really a story aside from the romance with an interesting yet unexplored dystopian backdrop.

Heaven by Christoph Marzi - 1 star
Do you ever read a book and just feel angry? That was me with Heaven. I know it was a fantasy, but it made no sense. And not in a 'too weird to understand but slightly cool' sense. In a 'characters have no motives and have a habit of telling strangers their backstories whilst running across London rooftops which is highly unlikely and kind of impossible' sense.

  1. I had no idea Christoper Paolini had books other than the Inheritance Cycle, but sad that it didn't work for you. Either way, great list!

  2. Aww, I'm sorry Delirium didn't do it for you. That's one of my favorite books! Great list, though. I've never read any of the ones that worked for you, but I'll have to check them out. Some of them seem very interesting.

  3. You've definitely got some gorgeous covers on this list! "The Bone Clocks" looks iiiiiinteresting. You definitely got the great cover edition. When I looked it up on Goodreads the cover image is so plain I probably wouldn't have even noticed it on a shelf unless I was looking for it specifically.

    1. The Bone Clocks is gorgeous! When I first saw that goodreads cover image I didn't even give it a second glance (even though I really liked the author's book Cloud Atlas) but when I saw the black and pink cover in the store I knew I needed it! It's a super wierd and unpredictable but interesting story and I'd highly recommend it!
