Books I Hope to get this Winter

I'm not actually expecting any books from Santa, but I do have a lot of book vouchers left over from my birthday to spend. At the moment I'm holding off on using them in case I need them for university books for next semester. I usually borrow all my required reading books first, and then buy the ones I plan to write my essays on when the essay questions are released - so I'm unlikely to be spending them over this Christmas. I also doubt I'll have time to read any books that aren't for class in the coming months. But it's nice to think about the books I would buy if I had the time. Or preferably, imagine Santa bringing them for me (because hardcovers are expensive - especially since most of the books I want to buy have only been published in the US!).

1. Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi
I have never read anything by Mafi before but I desperately want to. I have actually never read anything written by someone who is Iranian like me, and to come across Tahereh's name and seeing her be so successful in her writing makes me really happy.

2. Whichwood by Tahereh Mafi
I normally don't add sequels to my TBR before reading the first book, but Whichwood is the exception. It's based on Persian (Iranian) mythology! I don't know a lot about the mythology but still! This is the kind of book I didn't know I wanted.

3. Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
I love rich fantasy worlds, and I have heard incredible things about the one in Mask of Shadows. Also it's a fantasy with a gender fluid protagonist! Please publishers! Publish more stories with gender fluid characters because we need more!

4. Peter Darling by Austin Chant
This sounds like a book I would love, and it's been on my wishlist for a little while. A Peter Pan retelling where everyone has grown up with a super cute romance? Sign me up! Also that cover is so dreamy and pretty.

5. Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee
This one has been on my TBR for the longest. But it hasn't been published in the UK! I think that's why it's kind of expensive as a paperback when I look for it online? But I'm really looking forward to it because I need more young heroes in my life.

6. The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
What am I doing! I have an e-ARC and I haven't read it yet! I genuinely haven't had time for anything recently aaaa. But even though I haven't read it yet I really want a copy because the art is so pretty. Maybe when it comes out in paperback next year.

7. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee
I saw so much high praise for this book this year but I can never find it anywhere (again, I think it was only published in the US). I'm always so keen to read mythology-inspired books, plus I hear this book is really realistic because the protagonist is actually concerned with school and achieving grades whilst saving the world.

8. Release by Patrick Ness
Release is the only book on this list that I have read, and I adored it. It's probably one of my favourite releases of 2017, and I need my own copy. It's currently only in hardcover, so unless Santa brings it for me I will wait for the paperback (which will inevitably be cheaper ).

9. Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman
Another book I've heard nothing but excellent things about. It sounds very emotional and I know it deals with cultural identity and mental illness. I have noticed that I tend to avoid these themes in books for personal reasons, but when I feel confident enough I am definitely picking Starfish up because it sounds excellent.

10. Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee
I've never read any Tolstoy, but I'm hoping it won't be too much of a problem when I get my hands on this book. I cannot tell you how much I need books with asexual characters in my life, and it makes me really happy to hear such positive things about the rep in this book.

Have you read any of the books on my list. What were your thoughts? What books are you hoping to get for Christmas or in the new year?

This post was inspired by the prompt 'Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings' on Top 10 Tuesday, which is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. I was lucky enough to get a copy of Mask of Shadows through Netgalley and what a great book! I can't wait for the sequel (which is really the only bad thing about ARCs - your waiting time is that much longer!).

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks!

    1. Ah I was really hoping to get it through Netgalley but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I look forward to reading it! Also I agree that waiting for a sequel when you read the ARC of the first book sucks!

    2. I think I only got it because they did a brief 'read it now' thing where you didn't have to request it. Otherwise, I'd have been in the same boat. I hope you get to read it soon though! Hah - yes, indeed! Even more so when it's a fantasy novel because fantasy authors are notorious for taking forever to put out a sequel.

  3. I totally feel the pain of not being able to read non-school books. I struggle with that a lot during the semester, so I try to read as much as possible over break. You've got a great list here! I've never heard of Peter Darling, but I am INTRIGUED. I'll be rooting for Santa to bring you some nice, pretty hardcovers this holiday season!

    1. I've been trying to catch up on reading for next semester *already*, just so I don't struggle with keeping up like I did this semester. But it doesn't leave much time for the fun reading. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Thanks, Lefty, you too! :D

  4. Oh my God, your list is perfect. I've never read a Peter Pan retelling, but another one that people highly recommend is Tiger Lily. Have you read it? I've heard it's a heart-breaker!
I JUST bought Furthermore yesterday and its cover makes me so happy! I can't wait to read it, buy Whichwood, and collect this entire gorgeous series. :)
I'm such a sucker for beautiful covers. If a book has a stunning aesthetic, I'm already 60% sol on it, lol!
I love the minimalistic, matt texture of the cover for Release, and I love that those faces are hidden in it.

    1. Thanks Sophie! I haven't read a Peter Pan retelling before either, but Tiger Lily sounds familiar. I'll check it out!

I'm literally the same when it comes to pretty covers. I have become better at restraining myself when it comes to spontaneously buying pretty books recently, but it's still a problem!

I agree with you about the Release cover. I got a poster of the book at YALC and I love it. It's definitely one of my favourite covers of this year.

    1. Thank you Noor! I'm so glad to hear you love Furthermore and Mafi as much as you do. It makes me want to read her books even more now. I love hearing about writers who inspire people - a writer who inspires me is V.E. Schwab :)
