Summer TBR

Summer is starting, so it is the perfect time for me to share the books I plan to read this season! Just from looking at my TBR, I noticed that there aren't a lot of books I'd consider 'summery'. Even when the sun is out, it seems I just want to read dark books. But I never seem to stick to my reading plans, so I'm sure some fluffy contemporaries will sneak their way in somehow.

1. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
I can't wait to read this. I've never read a space opera before, but I hear this book is a good place to start. If I like it enough I'll probably go on to also read the other two books in the Wayfarers series this summer.

2. And I Darken by Kiersten White
I read And I Darken two summers ago and was obsessed, but I need a refresh before I go onto book 2 of The Conquerors Saga. This summer is also the perfect time because it's when book 3 releases, so I can binge the whole series.

3. Smoke and Iron by Rachel Caine

The fourth installment in The Great Library series is coming this summer, and I couldn't be more ready. I love these characters and this story. I can't believe I've never re-read it - I think I might have to some time soon.

4. Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi

I binged the first three books of the Shatter Me series over Easter in a matter of days. I was so hooked! I deliberately put off Restore Me to spread out the obsession, but I can't wait to dive back in.

5. Stardust by Neil Gaiman

I've just got to do it, okay! I need to read Gaiman, still. This book has been on my kindle for years, and next to The Help it's been on my Goodreads shelf for the longest. I'm on a mission to read his books this year.

6. Uprooted by Naomi Novik
I feel like my seasonal TBR lists have been repeating themselves ever since I started this blog in 2015, because Uprooted always seems to be on here. It's been at the bottom of my to-read shelf the third longest. Maybe this year?

7. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Taking fourth place at the bottom of my TBR is All the Light We Cannot See. It was one of the first Netgalley books I requested so I feel obliged to read it at some point. It doesn't sound like my typical read, but I've heard so much praise about it.

8. Art in the Blood by Bonnie MacBird
Taking fifth place on the bottom of my TBR is The Art in the Blood. I think it's pretty clear that I'm on a mission this summer to power through my TBR (getting it to 0 was the mission I set myself at the beginning of the year).

9. Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

I've never read any Anthony Horowitz, but the synopsis for Magpie Murders caught my attention the instant I read it. I was lucky enough to find the beautiful hardcover in the charity shop, so clearly it is destiny.

10. City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

I have a book-shaped hole in my heart that only one of Victoria Schwab's books can fill. It feels like too long since I last read one of her books, so I'm desperate for August to get here already so I can read her latest book.

What books are you planning to read this summer? Do you pick books based on season, or are you more like me and read dark books in the summer or fluffy books in autumn/winter? Do you think you will stick to your TBR plans?

This post was inspired by the prompt 'Books to Read By the Pool/At the Beach' on Top 10 Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

  1. I tend to gravitate towards contemporary or historical fiction during the summer :D I love All the Light We Cannot See; the topic is heavy but it is an incredible book!

    1. Summer definitely feels like a contemporary lit season. I'll hopefully be throwing some fluffy YA contemporaries into the mix to let me escape from all the fantasy! I'm glad to hear you loved All the Light We Cannot See! I actually started it a couple of years ago but then got stuck with exams and completely neglected it. But I just know it's going to be amazing.

  2. Oh, I have Uprooted on my TBR as well. It sounds so good! I'm not sure when I want to read it though. I'm thinking more for the fall because I tend to like fantasy more in the fall/winter time for some reason. I hope you enjoy it! I cannot wait to hear your thoughts! :D

    1. Uprooted definitely seems like a fall-time book, particularly with the cover. I want to finally get it off my TBR though because it's been there for years and I feel bad for neglecting it for so long, because I've heard great things. Thanks!

  3. I need to read so many of these, particularly And We Darken and Uprooted. Have a fun time with these this summer!
