Priority Reads for 2018

2017 was filled with books I didn't get to read. Which is sad, because I have a stack of so many books that I'm certain I'm going to adore. I hope to be able to read more this year, or at least find more books that I loved, and I think these 10 books are definitely going to make the love list.

Now I Rise by Kiersten White
I took this on holiday with me this summer but I didn't get time for it! I know I'm going to be obsessed with it's brutal politics and violence like I was with the first book.

Shadowplay by Laura Lam
The first book in the Micha Gray trilogy was a great read. It's one of those books where you can feel is going to get better as the series progresses, and I cannot wait for more circus magic!

An Ember in the Ashes by Saba Tahir
People have nothing but love for Ember, and Saba seems like a genuinely wonderful person. I need more diverse fantasy in my life, and I'm sure this will live up to my hopes.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
I've found that I really love short and sweet classic books like The Wizard of Oz and The Time Machine and I'm looking for more that are just as quirky.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
I need to read some Gaiman already! My friend adores his work (she made me buy this book), and so does V.E. Schwab. I think 2018 is the time to fix the lack of his books in my life.

Worlds Collide by Chris Colfer
I've loved every Land of Stories book so far, and I know Chris won't disappoint with the finale. I'm saving it for a rainy day when I need a lighter read.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
I haven't read a lot of space sci-fi, but the more I hear about this book the more certain I am that it will be the book for me. I'm always up for a good queer space story.

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
The fact that I didn't read this in 2017 shows that I really didn't have the time, because I know I can finish it in a day. Leigh hasn't disappointed me yet.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle
I need some more pre-2000s sci-fi/fantasy in my life, and A Wrinkle in Time is at the top of my list. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it sooner because it sounds magnificent.

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby
I have wanted to read this for ages, and now I finally have a copy! Just no time! But I will find it this year, because if you can't tell from this list already, I love quirky and aesthetic magic.

What books did you mean to read in 2017 but didn't? Are there any that you are making a priority for 2018?

This post was inspired by the prompt 'Ten Books We Meant To Read In 2017 But Didn't Get To' on Top 10 Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

    1. Yes! The Conquerors Trilogy has had some epic covers so far, both with the UK and US editions, and I'm excited to see what the book 3 covers look like. I have promised myself I will read The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet this year - I feel like it has potential to be a favourite of mine too!

  6. I, also, have a stack of books I was supposed to finish last year. An Ember in the Ashes is on the top of my list to read soon. I don't read enough fantasy so I definitely want to focus on that genre this year. One of my goals this year is to read more classics and I am hoping to find a copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland soon so I can dive right in. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these books. Happy reading!

    1. I've heard Ember is really great so hopefully we both love it! I hope you find some excellent fantasy reads this year. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is free on the kindle store if you have a kindle or the kindle app! Amazon provides a lot of old books for free which is always brilliant. If not I hope you find a copy. Thanks Jeanna, you too!

  7. (OH NO I think my comment just got deleted...take 2!) This seems like such a good idea, I feel like I missed out on a bunch of books in 2017 that I desperately want to read. I also really want to pick up Shadowplay as I enjoyed the 1st book a lot! A few other books I want to make priorities to read in 2018 are Indigo Donut, Tash Hearts Tolstoy and The Language of Thorns.
I do hope you enjoy The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet! I was daunted by it before I started, but once I began I was really sucked in and I loved the characters. (I do adore a good queer space story.)

    1. Oh no! I'm sorry that's so annoying! Yeah, there were quite a few releases in 2017 I didn't get to, and even more books published from before 2017 that I didn't read. Pantomime was a great book, I'm glad you liked it too! I also really want to read Tash Hearts Tolstoy - I'm currently focusing on getting through all the books I own but I really want to buy myself a copy of it.
I hope so too! I've heard that it's brilliant, and even though I haven't read many space stories I feel like this will be something I enjoy.
(Lovable queer characters in space sounds like a sub-genre I can get behind!)

  8. I need to read the sequel to An Ember in the Ashes. And A wrinkle in time is one of my all time favorite books! Hope you can get to those this year.
