Books on My Autumn TBR

Autumn means it's back to classes for a lot of us, and for me as an English student, it means back to long required reading lists that I didn't actually get to reading this summer like I should have. I've actually been in a slow place in terms of reading this summer, so having a bunch of new books to be reading that I'm not excited by isn't ideal. Last year I was able to read the books I wanted in between the ones I was assigned, and it really helped me power through them all. But if my weird reading place persists I don't know if I can do the same this year.

Today for this Top 10 Tuesday, I've decided to list some of the books I need to read for my course this year. I'm hoping that some of you will recognise the titles and encourage me to read them if you enjoyed them! Hopefully it will help kick my reading instincts back into place!

As an extra note, if you have read any of these and have content warnings for any of them that would be amazing. Last year I had to read one or two books with some graphically upsetting scenes, and although I was fine I do like to prepare myself in advance.

1. Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
2. Open Secrets by Alice Munro
3. Oleanna by David Mamet
4. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
5. The Wasp Factory by Ian Banks
6. Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson

7. The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst
8. The Fat Black Woman's Poems by Grace Nichols
9. The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad
10. Howard's End by E.M. Forster
11. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
12. The Waste Land, and Other Poems by T.S. Eliot

13. Odour of Chrysanthemums by D.H. Lawrence
14. Kew Gardens by Virginia Woolf
15. The Collected Stories of Katherine Mansfield by Katherine Mansfield
16. Jacob's Room by Virigina Woolf
17. Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh
18. Voyage in the Dark by Jean Rhys

Have you read any of these books? What were your thoughts? What are some of your favourite books that were part of your required reading?

This post was inspired by the prompt 'Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR' on Top 10 Tuesday, which is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. I do not miss my days of working towards my english degree... at least you have variety of books this semester it appears. I read most of the books in your 7-18 section... they are fine. I don't think I loved any of them though.

    Good luck!

    1. It does seem like a good variety which I'm very happy about. Honestly, 'fine' is as good an encouragement as I'm going for here, because I don't expect to love any of these either! As long as they're not torturous, I'm happy :)
      Thanks Marissa!

  2. Brokeback Mountain tore me apart. It's beautifully written and very emotional. I hope you can find some gems among the required reading!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. I'm aware of the plot of Brokeback Mountain and I'm not sure I'm ready to read it! At least it's short, becuase I don't know if I'd be able to get through that much tragedy in a full length novel. I'm glad you liked it. And I hope I'm able to find some gems too!

  3. Middlesex is amazing! Eugenides is an incredible author.

    1. That's really great to hear! I know literally nothing about the book other than the title, and I've never read anything by Eugenides to compare. I hope I like it as much as you did!
