Only having 9 five star reads out of the 34 books I've read this year looks really sad. And it kind of is. It's even sader when you know that 3 of these books are rereads. It's been a bad reading year so far for me, and I've been in a bit of a slump lately which doesn't help. Last year 30 out of 71 books I read were 5 stars, but I don't know what's changed this year that I've been struggling to find books I actually like. Hopefully that will change in the latter half of the year (although probably not if my required reading has anything to say about the matter!).
1. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (reread)
2. A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab (reread)
3. A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
4. Nowhere Near You by Leah Thomas
5. The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
6. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (reread)
7. Angel: After the Fall, Volume 1
8. Angel: After the Fall, Volume 4
9. Whisper to Me by Nick Lake
How has your reading been going so far this year? How many 5 stars have you dished out? Is there any book in particular that has stood out for you?
Not that many 5 stars, but I realised that I seem to not hand those out quickly, quite a few 4 stars though. I really liked the premise of A Darker Shade of Magic, maybe I should read the sequels soon :) Great list!
ReplyDeleteI always thought I gave out a lot of 5 stars but turns out most books I read are 4 too. It was the premise of ADSOM that had me intregued initially too, and I do think the books get better from the first so I'd say the sequels are definitely worth it!
DeleteGreat list! A few of these are on my TBR and I'm actually reading ADSOM right now. Here’s my T10T for this week!
ReplyDeleteThanks! ADSOM is awesome and I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading :D
DeleteGreat list! I've been dying to read The Shades of Magic series, so I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed them :)
ReplyDeleteHere is my TTT post!
Thank you! The series is really fun and has such a unique concept, and even though I think it's a bit overhyped in terms of actual story (especially in the first book) I love it regardless. If you get to read the books I hope you enjoy them too!
DeleteACOL was on my list this week too! I love all of the Shades of Magic books, glad you do too! I feel you on the not having many five star reads this year, of the 18 books I've read, ACOL has been the only five star.

Nice! I adore the Shades of Magic series - I can't get over how awesome all of V.E. Schwab's story concepts are! It seems like a lot of people haven't had many 5 star reads this year so we are not alone! I hope you find many more 5 star reads in the near future :)
DeleteLooks like you've read some spectacular books so far this year!!

Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out :D
DeleteDo you think that Nowhere Near You was better than the first book? I loved that book so much and I still have NNY on the bookshelf waiting to be read. :X I enjoyed The Wizard of Oz too! <3 Thanks for sharing, great list! And I actually don't 5 star often, lots of my faves are 4.5 up.

I think I liked NNY a tiny bit more than BYNMM - after I finished NNY I went back and gave it's predecessor 5 stars because I just loved them both too much. I'd definitely recommend it.
DeleteI normally round up my ratings instead of using half stars - if I didn't I think I'd have far fewer 5 star reads!
Thank you :D
I'm so glad you enjoyed the ADSOM books! I've read a snippet of Whisper to Me but I don't know much about it, so this makes me want to check it out. I don't actually know how many 5 star books I've read this year, hmm... Maybe I'll go see! But sometimes I forget to do book ratings haha.
ReplyDeleteADSOM is so awesome! Whisper to Me is a really beautiful book but it's pretty heavy with the dark content at times (I've got the warnings listed here if you want to check them out: http://rosequartzreads.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/whisper-to-me.html). It's very vivid, genuine and human and I'd really recommend it.
DeleteI always completely misjudge how many 5 stars I give out because I think it's way more than it actually is! And fair enough, sometimes I can't decide on my feelings for a book so I give it a while then forget to rate it all together.
The Best A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab. It is very awesome. http://aazae.com/
