Book Review: Heir of Fire

Title: Heir of Fire
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Series:book 3 of 6
Genre:Fantasy
My Rating: 4 stars
Buy: Book Depository
If I was not a fan of this series before, I definitly am now. While 'Crown of Midnight' felt like it was making it's way towards a twist in the story, 'Heir of Fire' is a huge step up where we see the end of the previous book plays out.

Maas shows us more of Celaena's world filled with magic and deception. Finally the series truly felt like a high fantasy series should, filled with fae and witches and wyverns and travelling across Erilea in a journey of self discovery. Celaena undergoes masses of character development, with glimpses at her future potential as she struggles with her recent loss and trying to deny the past. Having seen so much darkness thrust upon her life, it was wonderful to see how she processed it and moulded it into heroism, bringing out a whole other side to her character and being reborn into the person she was meant to be.

It was not just our protagonist who showed huge development, but also Dorian. He vastly matured as a character, showing clear signs of the King he could become.
"you cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love... Just as you cannot pick and choose which parts of me you accept."
Many new characters were introduced, but it did not feel like the book was being overloaded as each of them were distinct and interesting. I did not care much for Aedion or Rowan in the first half of the book, but the grew on me as the story progressed.  Manon's scenes were difficult to adjust to, but allowed us to gain a greater perspective of the world and characters from both sides of the oncoming war. Glimpsing at Manon's thoughts really changed how I considered the villains of this story and this made the book stand apart from others of it's genre, as often the villains are reduced to being simply 'evil'.

On the whole the pace felt a little slow to begin with, picking up immensely in part 2. 'Heir of Fire' sets us up for 'Queen of Shadows' brilliantly, leaving off on a point where plotlines begin to converge in what will inevitably be an epic conflict filled with well designed characters, painful plot twists and magic beyond anything we've seen yet.

  1. YES Celaena's character development in this one, so good. I agree that Manon was a little offputting at first but I soon came to love her and her morally ambiguous self ;) I'm really glad you liked this one, great review :)
