TTT // Songs That I Wish Were Books

Top 10 Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This is in many ways a spin-off of my Music Match Monday posts, but instead of matching a book to a song, I will be listing songs that would make beautiful books.

1. Roman Holiday by Halsey
This is the most positive sounding song on Halsey's album, Badlands, but still has some sadness behind it. It would make an amazing road-trip song where the characters run away from their past lives to start anew.

2. I'm a Mess by Ed Sheeran
This song makes me really emotional. Every Ed Sheeran song makes me very emotional. I wouldn't be able to create a story half as beautiful as this, but I would love to read one.

3. Laughter Lines by Bastille
I feel like this is an epilogue to a book, set many years after the action of the story after everything has changed. The people look back on their past and somehow find beauty in the sadness of the past.

4. How to Be a Heartbreaker by Marina and the Diamonds
I don't like writing contemoraries, but this would be so so cool as one. It's an upbeat and fun song, but the story could also have some darkness behind it and why the character is the way they are.

5. Up All Night by Owl City
"I fell in love with a ghost, oh, under the moonlight" - I'm taking this literally for this story idea. A human in love with a ghost or some other magical creature where their worlds seperate them from being together.

6. Monster by Paramore
I love this Paramore song. The theme is right up my street when it comes to writing concepts. It's like a dystopian or a fantasy where there are a group of people fighting for their freedom.

7. Better Than Revenge by Taylor Swift
A lot of criticism has come up over this song recently, but I don't care. This is an epic song and so different to Taylor's other music. This wouldn't be a petty teen girl fight book over a boy, oh no, this would be a book packed with plotting and revenge until it goes too far.

8. Meet Virginia by Train
A song about the perfect girl who isn't so perfect. Books have tried this before many times, but I haven't read one yet that has really hit me like this song does.

9. For Him by Troye Sivan (feat. Allday)
I hear another runaway adventure in this song.

10. Trade Mistakes by Panic! At the Disco
This is such a tragic song about fixing the wrongs the person did when they were alive. It reminds me of Ghost. I actually tried writing this before but couldn't get the emotion portrayed quite in the way I wanted, but I might just dig up my work and give this another go.

I had so much fun with this TTT! I used to write stories based on songs all the time and this has inspired me to get back into that. Do you have any awesome book ideas inspired by music?

  1. I feel very old, I only know the Train song on this list! :) Many of these sound like cool story ideas though. I've never thought of writing a story based on a song. I usually hear songs that really resonate with stories I'm writing, which gives inspiration!

    1. Train is still awesome! I get what you mean, often songs don't have the level of complexity to tell a whole story, but I like to use them as starting points. For me, it's harder to match a song to something I'm already writing. Often I can match a couple of lyrics, but never the full song. But when I'm looking for musical inspiration for an overall theme, 8tracks is always a great website to help with that :)

  2. So many good picks! Love Paramore, Owl City, Bastille, and Ed Sheeran. Great choices!

  3. I had Better Than Revenge on my list this week too, but I prefer your idea for it than mine!
